It's far from a comprehensive summary of his career, but its handful of extras make it a notable, if not quite essential, addition to his catalog. The Notorious B.I.G. (born Christopher Wallace and also known as Biggie Smalls) was shot to death in 1997, just a few years after he established himself as a major force in hip-hop. The murder has still not been solved. He left behind a 3-year-old daughter, as well as a newborn son, Christopher Wallace Jr., who portrays him, as a boy, in the movie and also appears on a soundtrack, on a remix of 'One More Chance.' It's the album's low point: a track of stunningly bad taste, juxtaposing the boy's rapping with his late father's sexual boasts. Christopher Wallace Jr.

Clearly has some talent, but this was not the best way to showcase it.More fulfilling are several demos that prove The Notorious B.I.G. Was fully capable of being mesmerizing, even with bare-bones musical backing; and 'Party and Bull-,' a raw, spirited pre-stardom track, resurrected from the soundtrack of the 1993 film 'Who's the Man?' Jay-Z and Santogold join forces for a slick new Kanye West-produced track, 'Brooklyn Go Hard,' that will also be on Jay-Z's upcoming album, 'The Blueprint 3.' And Jadakiss contributes the heartfelt 'Letter To B.I.G.,' addressing his late friend directly with lines like 'I could go on for a year about how would it be if you were still here/Game has got cheaper/Rappers is more commercially successful now/But the heart's a lot weaker.' The Notorious B.I.G.' S strong-voiced widow, Faith Evans, is on this track, too.

'We try so hard to understand why you had to go away,' she sings. 'We just keep our heads to the sky, 'cause we know we're gonna see you in the next lifetime/But it's never easy saying goodbye.' Harper's music breathes some of the same air as fellow native singer-songwriter-guitarists John Martyn (the sonic ambitions, the edge) and Nick Drake (orchestrations and melancholy). He became a pal and muse to Brit rock royalty: Led Zeppelin paid tribute to Harper's integrity with its acoustic stomp 'Hats Off to (Roy) Harper,' while Pink Floyd had him sing lead on its biting music-biz satire 'Have a Cigar.' Through the vicissitudes of a long career, the 67-year-old Harper has kept writing and consolidated his back catalog into a cottage industry. Harper's 1971 LP, 'Stormcock' - one of English folk-rock's enduring masterpieces, now remastered and reissued with deluxe packaging - was a spiritual-philosophical manifesto.

Its atmospheric song suite vibrates with ire at social evolution being stunted by religious superstitions and political business-as-usual (hardly topics past their sell-by date). Harper's hypnotic phrases keen quietly through kaleidoscopic bits of orchestration, imbuing the music with a dark tension; the energy of anger is unleashed when Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page adds his acoustic power-riffing to the despairing-of-religion epic 'Same Old Rock.'

And Harper's haunted falsetto and bent acoustic notes make 'One Man Rock 'n' Roll Band' a tough eulogy for soldiers chewed up as grist for a national myth (the song working as a folk-rock precursor to 'The Call Up' by the Clash).Beyond 'Stormcock,' the best introduction to Harper is his hand-picked two-CD anthology, 'Counter Culture.' Spanning his career from 1966 to 2000, the set includes such highlights as the gorgeous 'Frozen Moment' (again with Page) and the age-old English melancholia of 'When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease.'

A nine-piece band lays out Mark Masters' dynamic arrangements with aplomb. Many of these tunes are relatively unknown, like the lead-off swinger, 'I'd Give My Life.' Here, Smulyan, trumpeter Joe Magnarelli, and pianist Pete Malinverni deliver ear-pleasing thoughts between Masters' moving writing and the buoyant bass and drum team of, respectively, Andy McKee and Steve Johns.' That Lucky Old Sun' rolls in sans theme, and finds Smulyan, altoist Dick Oatts, French hornist John Clark, and tenorman Scott Robinson, among others, exhibiting sonic gems. Oscar-winner 'High Noon' starts with a hint of its famed theme, then Masters heads it into slow blues territory.

Robinson's bass clarinet offers a fitting sermon. 'We'll Be Together Again' is a baritone-piano duo, the timeless melody embraced by Smulyan.Download this: 'I'd Give My Life'. Zan StewartUNUSUAL COMBO 'Delaware River Suite' Bill Mays' Inventions Trio (No Booze Music #02)Pianist and composer Bill Mays' Inventions Trio - with cellist Alisa Horn and trumpeter and flugelhornist Marvin Stamm - offers beguiling originals and covers in an ace, if unusual, combination.

The heart of the group's second CD is the six-movement title suite, which begins with Mays' spoken introduction on his lifelong affinity for rivers - including the Delaware, near which he lives. On the perky 'Rapid Ride at Skinner's Falls,' the players deliver crisscrossing, contrapuntal lines, creating a beaming sonic landscape. Mays' firm touch yields rich, ringing notes; Stamm's warm, expressive tone buoys his smart ideas; and Horn uses her bow to issue resounding textures. 'Float' is free-form leaning; 'Shohola Hoedown & Campfire' has a bright, country-esque flavor. May's rumbling piano lines underpin 'Rollin' Down the Water Gap.' The partnering of two classic bop blues variants - Miles Davis' 'Sippin' at Bells' and Bud Powell's 'Dance of the Infidels' - is spot-on.

Jobim's 'Zingaro' has a lovely, delicate quality, as does Villa-Lobos' 'Bachianas Brasilieras #5.' Mays' trio is scheduled to appear Friday and Jan. 24 at The Kitano, 66 Park Ave.

Joey DeFrancesco (HighNote)Philly-based organist Joey DeFrancesco joins his regular drummer, Byron Landham, and guest saxophonist Jerry Weldon for a program of evergreens. It's a no-frills blowing date, the kind that arrived in the mid-1950s. The songs are treated without fanfare, the improvising is top notch. It's an old concept that sounds fresh here.

Jackie McLean's 'Dig' - miscredited to Miles Davis - and 'Blues Up and Down' find the three vets working persuasively at fast tempo. Weldon, with his full, muscular tone, scores with simple bursts, long, winding lines and more. The leader's bright tone is behind an array of thoughts that dance assuredly over Landham's burning beat. On the famed J.J. Johnson ballad, 'Lament,' DeFrancesco plays softly, and with great taste, drawing the listener. The Latin-pulsed 'Besame Mucho' gets a warm melody reading via Weldon, who follows with another series of appealing remarks over the leader's buoyant accompaniment.

In his solo, DeFrancesco's chordal passages stand out. DeFrancesco is scheduled to appear Jan. 1 at the Iridium Jazz Club, 1650 Broadway at 51st Street, New York. Today he has numerous acolytes reproducing his style, including the Paris-born guitarist Stephane Wrembel.Wrembel, now based in New York, was trained in classical, but discovered Reinhardt's music and has been an apostle ever since. His latest features David Grisman on mandolin as a counterpoint with a few tunes featuring brass and vocals accompanying his trio.
